Delivering the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree: “A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity”
Theron Schmalzried has been driving for 42 years, including 23 with Apex Transportation. During his career, Theron has accumulated more than 4 million miles of experience as a professional truck driver. He’s received numerous safety awards over his career, including the Long Haul Driver of the Month in September 2019.
In 2020, Theron was one of the two drivers who helped delivered the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree from the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison (GMUG) National Forests in his home state of Colorado to our nation’s capital building in Washington, D.C.
In an op-ed he wrote for Fox News, Theron described the journey as “a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” and said he felt “extremely honored to represent the trucking industry” while making the special delivery. Theron also discussed the sense of pride he has as a member of the trucking industry, especially in 2020 “during a year where the industry really stepped up to deliver to our fellow Americans in need.”
During a difficult year for so many, Theron was excited to help spread some holiday cheer in the communities he stopped in along his route. In an interview with The Hill, Theron said, “It was really surprising to see how many people were tracking the tree and stopping to see it as the tree passed through.” Theron also discussed the excitement and enthusiasm among community members who gathered to see “The People’s Tree” while making stops along the way during an interview on Fox News.
