HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE AWARDED THE GRAND CHAMPION OF THE 2023 NATIONAL TRUCK DRIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS, OR THE "SUPER BOWL OF SAFETY?"
I’m honored to be the Grand Champion of the 2023 National Truck Driving Championship and represent the millions of truck drivers who continuously put safety first while navigating the roads. Winning this year’s award is not only a personal achievement, but a testament to the dedication and professionalism of all my fellow drivers.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE COMPETING IN THE SUPER BOWL OF SAFETY.
My first NTDC appearance was in 2000 when I competed in the 5-axle class, and I was recognized with the vehicle condition award for best pre-trip vehicle inspection. In 2018, I proudly represented Nevada as a member of the winning team at nationals and achieved the state grand champion title. In 2019 I was recognized as Nevada’s driver of the year. 2023 was my 14th time at nationals. Winning the Grand Champion title doesn’t just belong to me; it belongs to all the dedicated professionals who prioritize safety and excellence on the road.

WHY IS SAFETY WHILE DRIVING IMPORTANT TO YOU?
With over 37 years on the road and more than 2.5 million miles without an accident, I’m no stranger to safe driving. Collectively, my fellow UPS drivers and I at the competition represented 413 years of service and 277 years of safe driving, reflecting my company’s enhanced safety training efforts. Our commitment to safe driving not only protects us but also ensures the well-being of everyone on the road.
WHAT IS THE VITAL ROLE THAT THE TRUCKING AND LOGISTICS INDUSTRY PLAYS IN THE AMERICAN ECONOMY AND YOUR COMMUNITY?
It’s remarkable to think that truck drivers like me play such a pivotal role in keeping the wheels of our economy turning. An astonishing 72.5% of all goods in the U.S. are moved by professional truck drivers. And even more, within my state of Nevada, 79.9% of our local communities rely solely on trucking for their deliveries.
