Trucking Delivers for Memorial Day Holiday

From food to fuel, to commemoration ceremonies, the trucking industry plays integral part in national holiday

May 21, 2015 – Today, Trucking Moves America Forward (TMAF), the industry-wide image and education movement reminds motorists that the professional trucking industry is an integral part of the Memorial Day holiday as we recognize the sacrifices of our nation’s veterans. Professional truck drivers are committed to safely delivering the goods Americans have come to enjoy this holiday weekend.

“When you are traveling the roads this Memorial Day weekend to be with family and loved ones, it’s good to remember that the trucks riding alongside you are delivering the goods that make your holiday great,” said Kevin Burch, TMAF co-chairman and president of Jet Express. “As we honor the sacrifices of our nation’s armed forces for their commitment to duty and country, professional truck drivers are honored to help deliver to holiday ceremonies, and to do so safely,” Burch added.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) predicts this Memorial Day will set a ten-year record, with over 33 million travelers taking to America’s highways and roads over the extended weekend. With so many motorists on the road, safety has remained a top-priority for the trucking industry. The truck-involved fatality rate has decreased 74% since 1975 and in the last decade alone, it has dropped 38%.

Seven million trucking professionals nationwide move food, fuel and critical cargo in manufacturing, healthcare, retail and more. The professional trucking industry is compromised not just of drivers and companies, but suppliers and vendors who keep the industry moving during their road travels.

“Our Pilot Travel Centers and Flying J Travel Plazas around the country are a home away from home for many of North America’s professional drivers,” said Ken Parent, COO of Pilot Flying J. “We are looking forward to serving millions of drivers this Memorial Day weekend as we honor and celebrate the men and women of our armed services who secure the freedoms we hold dear.”

Trucks are the largest transportation mover of freight. In 2014, trucks moved 9.96 billion tons, or 68.8% of all domestic freight. The professional trucking industry contributes $682 billion in revenue every year and is a significant part of our nation’s transportation economy.
