The Trucker features TMAF’s leaders during Black History Month.

To celebrate the modern-day achievements of African Americans in the trucking industry, Trucking Moves America Forward (TMAF) has selected four drivers who exemplify excellence in trucking. They were selected because of their professionalism and dedication to their jobs, commitment to safety and continuous efforts to move America forward every day.

The drivers are being featured on TMAF’s blog and social media pages throughout the month of February as well as on The Trucker.com. The stories highlight the drivers’ accomplishments and safety records and share the personal story of each driver. This is the first of four features in the series.

The Trucker: The Trucker features trucking’s critical role in Wreaths Across America

Wreaths Across America’s annual trek from Harrington, Maine, to Arlington National Cemetery has earned a reputation as the world’s largest veterans’ parade. More than 70 trucks lined the highway in late December to carry the hundreds of thousands of wreaths that were to be placed on the graves at the country’s largest veterans’ resting place.

Elisabeth Barna, executive vice president of industry affairs and senior advisor with the American Trucking Associations, said the response from the trucking industry is a sight that always leaves her in awe.

“We are a very patriotic and community-based industry and we would do anything for anybody,” Barna said. “I think that this project is really special. You talk to anybody, whether they are competitors or retired drivers, everybody wants to participate in it.”

Wreaths Across America began as a small ceremony led by the Worcester Wreath Company in 1992 as a way to distribute a surplus of wreaths, but as plans were underway several other organizations and volunteers stepped up to help. The annual tribute went on quietly until 2005, when a photo of the wreaths at the cemetery garnered national attention. By 2007, Wreaths Across America was formed as a non-profit organization and has grown exponentially each year since.

Trucking industry image group Trucking Moves America Forward this week recognized a number of industry organizations and companies that have given back to their local communities during the holiday season.

Kevin Burch, co-chairman of TMAF and president of Jet Express, says it’s important for the group to recognize those in the trucking industry “who are not only delivering our special holiday moments, but who are giving back to their communities.”

“Whether it is through charitable donations, delivering the goods that make a family’s holiday special, or helping communities prepare for severe weather challenges, trucking keeps America moving forward during the winter season,” Burch says.

American Military News features a military veteran on trucking as a career

I am proud to have served this wonderful country of ours as a transportation specialist and a mechanic in the U.S. Army. I now drive a truck for my profession for YRC Freight for over 27 years.

The transition for me was a smooth one, but for some, it can be daunting making the transition back to civilian life and finding a job. I am proud that the trucking industry is doing their part to assist veterans’ transition from military to civilian life by providing job opportunities and career paths for those who have sacrificed. I am grateful to be part of an industry that gives back to our veterans during a time when they need it most. These brave men and women sacrificed everything to protect our freedom and democracy. Setting our veterans up for success after military life is just one way that we can show our gratitude for their service.

America’s veterans are trained to be the best, whether it’s working in the field or at a field office. That’s why trucking companies actively seek to hire more skilled veterans. Teamwork, leadership, dedication, loyalty and a strong work ethic, is what the industry needs from our veterans, and there are recruiting efforts happening across the country.

Moves America Forward (TMAF), the industry-wide education and image movement, is thanking America’s professional truck drivers during their #ThankATrucker campaign, during National Truck Driver Appreciation Week, September 8-14, 2019. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Delivering Life’s Moments.”

Commercial Carrier Journal: Five years into campaign, trucking image group TMAF looks to continue growth

In the more than five years since trucking industry image group Trucking Moves America Forward launched, the goal has been to tell the story of trucking and truck drivers. Over the next five years, the group hopes to do more of the same.

Now mostly known simply as TMAF, the group is continuing to launch initiatives to promote the industry in a positive light to the general public and tell trucking’s story. Elisabeth Barna, executive vice president of industry affairs for ATA, said at the Great American Trucking Show last week the group has used social media and billboards as major tools to accomplish its goals through the first five years.

Kevin Burch, co-chair of TMAF and president of Jet Express, added that trailer wraps the group is selling to fleets have also made a big difference in getting TMAF’s message out to the general public. He said 240 of the wraps have been sold so far with each trailer being seen by an average of 16 million people as they move goods across the country.
